Cool Science: Nanotubes and Lungs

Unstained alveolar macrophage containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT’s) in the cytoplasm. Dr. Mary Jane Thomassen’s group at East Carolina University is currently investigating the potential deleterious effects of inhaled MWCNT’s on the lung epithelium as well as alveolar macrophages using a mouse model system. In the image below, inserted in the bottom right corner is a higher magnification of the boxed region in the main image. These images were taken on the Thermo Scientific Talos transmission electron microscope by Dr. Aaron Bell in the Analytical Instrumentation Facility.
