AIF Undergraduate Staff Microscopist Chosen as the Fall 2019 Student Commencement Speaker

Abby Carbone has been named the 2019 Student Commencement Speaker. She’s graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering and a minor in Nanotechnology. Abby has been an excellent addition to our facility and we’re excited to see her give her speech! There is a live stream link that will be provided closer to the commencement date (December 19).

Abby has contributed to AIF in two main ways: working with the electron microscopes and outreach. She’s in the process of imaging samples for external customers, which will be a significant focus of her job next semester. She’s also given tours of the AIF to important visitors, represented the AIF at a southeastern nanofacility conference at Oak Ridge, and conducted science outreach demonstrations for students at the AIF.

“Dedicated to science education and communication, Carbone says she learned “the importance of just showing up.””
